Let’s get something out of the way. First of all, Planetside 1 was so far ahead of it’s time and it’s not even funny. It created the MMOFPS genre when MMORPGs were still in it’s growing stage. It’s kinda amazing that Sony could create that kind of experience in the mid 2000s, even with some technical hinderances. So it’s something to behold when you think about online gaming in a turbulent decade.
So anyways,
The most shocking thing about Planetside 2 is it’s F2P. Which is astounding because when Planetside 1 was released it was a full blown retail game. I will give Tribes: Ascend a lot of credit for trying to be outside the “Modern Warfare” genre. It does it very well and I loved what I played of it. But the fact, it’s F2P as all hell. But to be fair, If it would be released as 20 or 30 dollar multiplayer game, I would’ve waited for the Winter Sale to get it. So the fact that’s it’s a free game has it going for the game. I have a lot gripes with it, mainly it really doesn’t lend itself well for playing with friends and that to get really good at it, you would have to be able to do physics problem in your head to be able to get good with a spinfusor and mid air kills. Another thing is that they won’t do user made maps, which would help in the level variety, because woof, that is some rough variety on those maps.
Enough of my bitching of Tribes, I’m here to slobber over Planetside 2. PS 2 has like 4 continents stretching over some servers and it is beautiful, holy shit. Someone really wanted to their entire soul into that graphics. Because it is hella awesome. Gargantuan sized contintents with enough space that have several air and ground battles. Let me just warn the solo people, do you know how to do voice chat in the game? If you do, please tell me how do it in the comments because doing a battle with random strangers is a crap shoot. Also I must mention that you will die a lot. Even if you are in a tank or airplane, You will still die a lot because battles will just happen when you get to the area. Tanks are hella fun, holy shit, The vehicles are so awesome. To get good at it, you have to have certification on it, which is good. Gunships are really good as long you have a coordinated team effort. If not, well good luck with that. Raiding team bases is so much fun when you have a group of friends.
Did I mention this is one gargantuan map and if you’re not on vehicle, good luck hoofing it to the nearest battle area. Did I also mention this is a persistent battlefield? Because it is and that idea of a persistent world in a game is a lot endearing to a game like Planetside 2 more than just the world in Borderlands 2. This persistent world is so well executed it shoved BL 2 off the top of the line. It is so good, you guys need to play it.
